The wedding cake is the traditional celebratory dessert served to the guests at a reception following the ceremony. Wedding cakes have been part of the marriage ceremony ever since medieval times. Originally they were made of wheat which was a symbol of fertility and prosperity. The wedding cake is a tradition that began back in the Roman Empire. At the time, it was a loaf of bread that the groom broke over the bride’s head as a symbol of his dominance in the marriage. The color of the cake was typically white to symbolize purity. The joint task of the bride and the groom cutting the cake was meant to symbolize their first joint task in married life. The gesture of feeding cake to one another was a symbol of the commitment the bride and groom are making. Today wedding cakes are as varied as the people getting married. But in all cases, the final design of the cake, to some degree, is a reflection of the tastes of the bride. Simple, yet elegant to the very ornate, wild, and over the top with lots of bling and themed cakes are all accepted. With the modern use of fondant and gum paste, a cake can be almost anything you want……
