The Masai Mara national reserve wildebeest migration is circular that happens throughout the year rotating within the Masai Mara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti national parks.
The wildebeest migration starts from Ngorongoro early in the year when the wildebeest go to the Ndutu area for the calving season. This is when millions of wildebeest are born after the migration continues to Serengeti in the Seronera area. Others stop at the river banks grazing along with other animals.
Lastly, the wildebeest migration follows the rainfall patterns. In October when the wildebeest return back to Serengeti they pass through the Loliondo in the East. Hence the migration wildebeest do not use the same route when coming and returning park. This is called the survival for the fittest as the wildebeest pass through Mara river amidst the hungry large Nile crocodiles on the river. On reaching the land the lions are on a wait alongside other big cats and predators.
During the wildebeest migration period, it is very hard to get available accommodations on the last minutes. This is called peak season and lodges or camps around the mara river are booked months early before the time of coming.

Masai Mara Lions, Masai Mara national Reserve is one of the most popular tourism destinations in the world for its high concentration of the big Cats, its much easy for a guest to spot the big cats in Masai Mara than any other place in Africa due to its big eco system and the wonderful great wildebeest migration that happens annually hence giving the lions big share of the food to feed on.
Lions in Masai Mara are also vulnerable despite the fact that they are the kings of the jungle but this does not let all their competitors to keep quiet and sleep but think tooth and nail to see that they reduce on the population of the Masai Mara Lions in the park like Hyenas always attack and even eat the cubs, Leopards also when they access the cubs kill them and the worst enemy is the lions themselves the male one which like feeding on the young ones hence making the lioness suffer to keep the young ones away from the adult males till some time when they are grown like three weeks.
Masai Mara Lions prides are mostly divided into groups those are:
The Cheli and Peacock pride
This was named after commonly been seen at the camp of Cheli, guests around this camp could easily spot the pride which was consisted of around 16 to 19 lions. It started small with only three lioness which were Nuru, Lilly and Siti. In 2008 the group received some cubs but they were forced out in mid 2009 after the joining of Caesar the gaint which came from the River pride.
Sebastian and Rescue who were two of the big lions in the group disappeared and they were last seen around 2011 leaving Caesar and the other three lions Akiki, Jamal and Joshua with tight competition in the pride and this has affected the newly born cubs which are mostly killed by the male lions.
masai mara lions
Enesikiria Pride
Which has 30 group members, its one of the biggest prides not only in Masai Mara but in the whole of African jungle located in the newly conserved area of Mara Naboisho Conservancy, the group has the oldest lions in Mara like Sero, Dada and Mickey.
These pride moments are always far from local communities with little effect on the locals but concentrates on the center of the reserve
Other small pride groups are the Acacia Pride, the Simba pride, the River Pride and many more small prides which get splinted due to competition up on growing young males.
Masai Mara unlike other game parks where there is much conflicts between the communities and the reserves, the Masaai locals cherish much the importance of wildlife and this has made it well for the lions to increase daily thanks goes to Mara predator project that has tried its best to protect the lions.

Maasai Mara National Reserve Rivers
Maasai Mara National Reserve Rivers : The Maasai Mara is a renowned wildlife reserve located in south-western Kenya, and it is primarily known for its vast grasslands, abundant wildlife, and annual wildebeest migration. While the reserve is not famous for its rivers, it does have a few significant watercourses that traverse its landscape. Here are some rivers in the Maasai Mara region:
Mara River
The Mara River is the most prominent river in the Maasai Mara ecosystem. It flows for approximately 395 kilometers (245 miles) through Kenya and Tanzania before entering the Maasai Mara. The river is a vital water source for the wildlife in the area and plays a crucial role during the Great Migration when thousands of wildebeests and other animals cross it.
The Mara River is a significant river in East Africa, flowing through the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It is approximately 395 kilometers (245 miles) long and serves as a lifeline for the wildlife in the region.
The Mara River is most famous for the dramatic wildebeest migration, which takes place annually between the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti. During this migration, millions of wildebeest, accompanied by zebras and other herbivores, cross the Mara River in search of greener pastures and water sources.
The river is characterized by its meandering course, rocky sections, and pools. It provides a vital water source for numerous animals, including crocodiles, hippos, elephants, buffaloes, and various bird species. The riverbanks are often lined with vegetation, attracting animals for grazing and drinking.
The Mara River is particularly notable for the wildebeest crossings during the migration. These crossings can be perilous, as the river is infested with large crocodiles waiting for an opportunity to prey on the crossing animals. The crossings are a spectacular and intense sight, drawing tourists and wildlife enthusiasts from around the world.
The Mara River is not only significant for its ecological importance but also serves as a boundary between Kenya and Tanzania. It offers scenic views and is a popular spot for wildlife safaris, river-based activities, and photography.
Talek River
The Talek River is another significant river in the Maasai Mara. It flows for about 240 kilometers (150 miles) from the Mau Escarpment before reaching the Maasai Mara reserve. The Talek River serves as a lifeline for many animals in the region, attracting wildlife such as hippos, crocodiles, and various bird species.
The Talek River is a notable river that flows through the Maasai Mara National Reserve in south-western Kenya. It is one of the important waterways within the Maasai Mara ecosystem and contributes to the diverse wildlife and natural beauty of the region.
The Talek River is a tributary of the Mara River and runs through the eastern part of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. It originates in the Loita Hills and travels in a south-westerly direction before joining the Mara River. The river spans a length of approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles).
Similar to the Mara River, the Talek River plays a crucial role in supporting the local wildlife. It provides a vital water source for animals within the reserve, especially during the dry season when water becomes scarce. Many herbivores, including zebras, wildebeest, and antelopes, depend on the Talek River for drinking and grazing.
The banks of the Talek River are often lined with lush vegetation, creating a favourable habitat for various bird species, reptiles, and smaller mammals. It is also common to spot crocodiles and hippos resting or basking along the riverbanks.
Due to its significance in the Maasai Mara ecosystem, the Talek River offers unique wildlife viewing opportunities for visitors to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Safaris and game drives in the reserve often include visits to the Talek River, where wildlife congregates, making it an excellent location for observing and photographing animals in their natural habitat.
Maasai Mara National Reserve Rivers
Talek River
Overall, the Talek River adds to the overall beauty and biodiversity of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, enhancing the experience of both wildlife and nature enthusiasts visiting the area.
Sand River
While not entirely within the boundaries of the Maasai Mara, the Sand River is located near the reserve’s eastern border. It originates in the Loita Hills and flows intermittently, depending on the rainfall. During the dry season, the riverbed becomes an important corridor for wildlife movement.
The Sand River is a notable river located in East Africa, flowing through the border region between Kenya and Tanzania. While it is not directly within the Maasai Mara National Reserve, it is often included as part of the larger Maasai Mara ecosystem due to its proximity and influence on the wildlife in the area.
The Sand River serves as a natural boundary between the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It runs parallel to the Mara River and is a tributary of the Mara River system. The river gets its name from the sandy riverbed and banks found along its course.
Similar to the Mara and Talek Rivers, the Sand River is an important water source in the region and plays a significant role in sustaining the wildlife populations of the Maasai Mara ecosystem. It provides a crucial watering hole for animals, especially during the dry season when other water sources may become scarce.
The Sand River is also known for its scenic beauty, with picturesque views of the surrounding savannah, riverine forests, and rocky outcrops. It attracts a wide variety of wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and a diverse range of bird species.
During the annual wildebeest migration, the Sand River is another obstacle that the migrating herds must cross on their journey between the Maasai Mara and Serengeti. These crossings can be challenging and dangerous, as crocodiles inhabit the river and wait for an opportunity to prey on the vulnerable animals.
The Sand River region offers opportunities for game drives, wildlife photography, and nature exploration. Although it may not be within the boundaries of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, it is often included in Kenya safari itineraries due to its close proximity and its contribution to the overall wildlife experience in the Maasai Mara ecosystem.
These rivers, particularly the Mara and Talek Rivers, support a diverse ecosystem and provide water and sustenance for the animals residing in the Maasai Mara reserve.

Talek River
Talek River in Maasai Mara is one of the seasonal rivers that drain the great Maasai Mara national reserve. The Talek River in Maasai Mara is one of the 5 tributaries of Mara river that drain the grassland and shrubland of Maasai mara. Other tributaries are River Sand, Tabora river, Tigite river and Somonche river. The five tributaries form the two perennial tributaries of Amala River and Nyangores river. These two main tributaries form the main Mara River which drains the largest part of the reserve both on the swampy land and the forested areas.
The Talek River in Maasai Mara is the longest tributary and joins the Mara river at over 16 kilometres on the North of the national reserve of Maasai Mara in the border between Kenya and Tanzania. They join to form the great Mara basin that covers over 13,500 square kilometres. Covered by the montane forests mixed with open grassland and shrubs. The river is the back born of wildlife in Maasai Mara National reserve especially in the central and power sections of Maasai Mara reserve.
The Talek River in Maasai Mara is a seasonal river hence affecting the discharge making it bimodal meaning two different charges following the climatic or rainy seasons. During the short rains, the discharge flow is low compared during the long heavy rainy season. The long rainy season starts from late March to May while short season starts from late October to November. With no clear source of water that drains the river, Talek river depends purely on rainy waters most that make the river seasonal.
The river is a source of water to different private ranches around the park. It’s also the catchment area for more aquatic animals with large schools of hippos, large Nile crocodiles and many more waterbird species. The wildebeest migration happens at the river which attracts more tourist in the area. Due to several attractions around the river more luxury accommodations have been constructed around the area.
Another important river in Masai Mara national reserve is the famous Mara River that runs across the reserve. The river lies across the great and largest wildlife migration (wildebeest Migration) corridor where ungulates migrate annually from the Tanzania Serengeti National Park to Maasai Mara National Reserve. The river is part of the Mara River basin that covers around 13,504 square kilometres. 65% of the River basin is found in Kenya while 35% is in Tanzania, originating from the Kenyan highlands. The Mara River flows over 390 kilometres and drains to the African largest fresh water body that is Lake Victoria.
The two tributaries of Mara river those are Amala river and Nyangores river drain the Western Mau Escarpment. This is the most famous part of Maasai Mara national reserve where most of the wildlife especially the big cats like leopards and lions. The Mara river continues up to the endless plains of Serengeti national park where it has another tributary of Longaianiet river.
The river meanders around the reserve through the open savannah grassland where small scale agriculture is conducted. The river is famous with the annual wildebeest migration where millions of the wildebeest and thousands of zebras cross from Serengeti to Maasai Mara and back to Serengeti.
In nutshell Talek river in Maasai Mara and Mara river form the complete ecosystem of Maasai Mara national reserve. The two rivers are the back born of the wildlife of the reserve which makes the reserve to be visited throughout the year due to permanent residents at the reserve.
